Arne Slot admitted feeling disappointed about the situation of Federico Chiesa after Liverpool’s win on Wednesday.
Liverpool secured another important win on their path to a potential Premier League title on Wednesday, beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield.
Goals from midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister secured the win for Liverpool, taking them 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal.
However, for the ninth time this season, Federico Chiesa failed to come on from the bench as Liverpool tried to close off the game.
The Italian has not had it easy at Liverpool since his move to Anfield last summer.
He failed to play a single competitive game for more than a month before joining Liverpool.
While there was no denying he was talented, Slot admitted being unable to put him straight into action due to his lack of sharpness.
The Liverpool boss arranged a personal training routine for the attacker to help him work himself back to match sharpness.
But although Chiesa is now fully match-fit, he continues to feature sparingly for the Reds.
So far, he has made just ten times for Liverpool, with the majority of those games coming as a substitute, resulting in Italy manager Luciano Spaletti recently questioning him.
He was an unused sub in Liverpool’s last game, and after the game, Slot admitted being disappointed that he is unable to hand Chiesa another opportunity for Liverpool this weekend.
Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup last month, and that game was the last time Chiesa played for the Reds.
The Reds’ lack of involvement in the cup this weekend means that the Liverpool squad are not in action this weekend.
Slot lamented that his side lost to Plymouth, admitting he would have preferred to have an opportunity to hand the likes of Chiesa and Harvey Elliott some much-needed game-time.
“I’m still a bit disappointed that we don’t play on the weekend,” he admitted after beating Newcastle?
“Because, of course, Mo [Salah] wouldn’t have played, of course Virgil [van Dijk] wouldn’t have played.
“But it would have been an ideal moment for the likes of Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah, Federico Chiesa and all the others to get some playing time as well to keep them ready for the end phase of the season.
“So, unfortunately, we’re out, but that also means that the players have two days off now, and then from Saturday onwards, we fully focus on Paris Saint-Germain.”
